Genpire + Fusion 360 and SolidWorks: CAD for Engineering, Genpire for the Factory (2026)

Probably both, because CAD ends earlier than founders expect. Fusion 360 (~$85 a month) and SolidWorks (roughly $2,820 to $4,716 a year on subscription) produce engineering truth: geometry, assemblies, drawings. A factory quote needs commercial truth too: complete BOM with sourceable components, finishes, packaging, quantities, target cost, and then suppliers, comparable quotes and a sample loop. What the CAD layer actually is

For the non-engineers reading: Fusion 360 (Autodesk) and SolidWorks (Dassault) are professional 3D CAD for physical products with mechanical reality: enclosures, furniture, kitchen tools, fixtures, consumer hardware. You model exact geometry, simulate stresses, build assemblies, and output engineering drawings and manufacturing files (STEP, DXF, STL). Fusion is the maker-and-startup favorite: cloud-connected, about $85 a month or $680 a year as of 2026, with CAM bundled. SolidWorks is the industry heavyweight: Design Standard around $2,820 a year, Professional $3,456, Premium $4,716, with perpetual-license routes in the $4,000 to $7,000 range plus maintenance; deeper enterprise muscle, steeper everything.

If your product has tight mechanical function (moving parts, tolerance-critical fits, structural loads), this layer isn't optional, and nothing on this page replaces it. Genpire is not CAD and doesn't pretend: no parametric modeling, no FEA, no assemblies.

Where CAD stops (earlier than the brochure implies)

Here's the gap that surprises first-time hardware founders. A complete CAD model, even with beautiful drawings, is not a quotable manufacturing package. Factories quoting your product ask for what the model doesn't carry: the commercial BOM (not just geometry, but sourceable specifications: this hinge from this class of supplier, this finish spec, this fastener standard, packaging materials), process expectations (molding vs machining vs casting decisions interact with quantities and target costs the model doesn't know), quantities and cost targets that frame every quote, and the whole supplier question: who makes this, at what MOQ, and how do their quotes compare?

The traditional answers are an experienced sourcing engineer (payroll), a sourcing agent (3 to 10% commission, minimums, the incentive issues our sourcing-agents guide details), or weeks of DIY marketplace work. That's the stretch a platform now covers.

Who needs which layer first

Engineer-founders (you're fluent in CAD): your model is strong and your gap is commercial; Genpire is the missing second half, and you'll feel it the first time comparable quotes replace marketplace archaeology. Non-engineer founders with mechanical products: you may need both layers plus judgment about sequence; for genuinely mechanism-driven products, get the engineering validated (a freelance mechanical engineer with Fusion is a common, affordable route) and run the commercial layer in Genpire around it. Founders of simple hardgoods (a bottle, a desk organizer, a lamp shade): full parametric CAD may be overkill; Genpire's generated spec often covers products whose geometry a factory can execute from good dimensioned specification, no simulation required. When in doubt, ask whether your product could break mechanically; "yes" points at the CAD layer, "not really" points straight at the spec.

The workflow, concretely

For the both-layers case: design and validate in Fusion or SolidWorks; export your design package (STEP, drawings, renders); bring the product into Genpire referencing that intent; review the generated commercial spec (the BOM lines, finishes, packaging and cost framing your CAD never held); RFQ, compare quotes, sample against both truths (does it match the geometry? does it match the spec?), order. Engineering change orders flow the same way: geometry updates in CAD, spec revisions in place in Genpire, no version-fork between the two because each owns its half.

FAQ

Is Genpire a CAD program?

No. No modeling, no simulation, no assemblies. It generates the commercial manufacturing package and runs sourcing, which CAD doesn't touch.

Can Genpire use my STEP files and drawings?

Bring them as your design intent; the generated spec organizes the commercial layer around your engineering, and your files accompany the RFQ where suppliers need them.

Fusion 360 or SolidWorks, if I'm choosing?

Fusion for startups and makers (price, cloud, CAM included); SolidWorks where industry compatibility, advanced assemblies or employer ecosystems demand it. Both are credible; the commercial gap afterward is identical.

Do factories accept Fusion/SolidWorks outputs?

Geometry files, yes, routinely. They'll still ask for the commercial package (BOM, finishes, quantities, targets), which is the layer this page is about.

What about 3D printing for prototypes?

Orthogonal and compatible: print-validate your geometry as you like; production quoting still runs through the spec-and-supplier loop.
