These three are not competing options. They occupy different layers of the same process, and confusing them is how teams end up paying for tools that do not solve their problem. Using a PLM system as a generator. PLM is built to hold and control product data. It will happily store a tech pack; it will not write one for you. Teams that buy PLM expecting to stop building specs manually are disappointed at implementation.
Expecting a generator to handle version control. Generating a corrected pack does not retire the previous one. If three versions are circulating and the factory has the wrong one, that is a management failure, not a generation failure.
Expecting either to replace fit expertise. A generator can propose tolerances from category norms. It cannot tell you that your particular fabric relaxes 3% after the first wash. That is knowledge, not data.

- Solo founder, 1–5 SKUs. Generation only. Version control is a folder and a naming convention. Buy expertise per project rather than per year, a technical review on your first style is worth more than software.

Generation produces the draft. A technical reviewer corrects fit logic, material behaviour and anything category-specific. The approved version enters the system of record with a revision number.
